[Motherboard] The motherboard cannot detect the USB device

If your motherboard cannot detect the connected USB device, please check the computer by referring to the contents below.


Initial determination

  • First check whether there is an USB port or cable damage, as this may result in failure to use your USB device.
  • Try to insert this USB device to a computer that is working normally. If it still cannot be detected, the issue could be the USB device.
  • Prior to using some USB devices, corresponding USB device software or drivers may need to be installed first. Confirm that your computer has installed the correct software or driver.
  • If you previously connected your USB device to the computer through an expansion port, remove the expansion port and connect the device to the computer’s USB port directly. If the device operates normally, the issue could be the expansion port.

Run Windows Update

1. Enter “Windows Update Settings” in the system’s search field and click “Open”.

2. After entering the Windows Update page, the system will automatically check whether there are downloadable updates available for installing; click “Install all” when downloading is completed.

Note: Some updates may need to restart the computer after installation; do not shut down the computer while the computer is restarting as this may cause the update to fail.

3. After updating, you can click “Update history” to view detailed information on recent updates.

Re-install the USB Root Hub driver

The main function of the USB root hub is to manage and coordinate USB devices connected to it. It is responsible for providing the functions of power management, data communication and signal conversion.

When there are USB connection issues, re-installing the USB root hub driver may help solve the problem.

1. Right-click the Windows icon in the Windows taskbar and click “Device Manager”.

2. Locate “Universal Serial Bus Controllers”→Right click on “USB Root Hub”→“Uninstall device”.

3. Click “Uninstall”.

4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 until all USB root hubs are uninstalled.

5. Restarting the computer and the system will reinstall the drivers automatically; if the problem persists, please continue with the troubleshooting below.

Update the chipset driver

This problem may also be caused by the chipset drivers; you can refer to [Motherboard] How to update the driver and download the chipset drivers from the official website of MSI and execute the driver update.

Update BIOS

Please refer to [Motherboard] How to update BIOS? and update the BIOS to the latest version, and then confirm whether the problem has been solved.
