[Monitor] How to troubleshoot no sound / audio distortion in monitor speakers?

When you encounter issues such as no sound, distorted sound, or other audio-related problems with your monitor speakers, please refer to the following steps for troubleshooting.

No sound from monitor speakers

Check if the monitor has built-in speakers

Not all MSI monitors are equipped with built-in speakers. It is recommended to visit the MSI official website and check the product specifications page for this information.

1. Visit the MSI official website and click on the magnifying glass icon located in the upper right corner. Enter your monitor model in the search bar, such as "Modern MD272PW,” and press the "Enter" key to initiate the search.

2. Click “Specification”.

3. You can find the speaker specifications of the monitor under the "SPEAKER" section. If you do not see the "SPEAKER" field or any information related to speakers, it means that the monitor does not have built-in speakers.

If you have confirmed that the monitor is equipped with built-in speakers on the specifications page, please continue with the following troubleshooting steps.

Check the audio connection

1. HDMI, DisplayPort, and Type-C (DP Alt mode) interfaces have audio transmission capabilities. However, VGA and DVI interfaces do not support audio. If you are using a VGA or DVI interface, or any interface that has been converted to VGA or DVI, you will still need to use an audio cable to connect the audio output of your computer to the audio input of the monitor.

2. Make sure your devices are connected to the correct audio ports.

Audio in:

display setting

Also known as Line-in, this interface is an audio input port used to connect external audio devices such as CD players, mixers, instruments, and microphones.

If your video signal is VGA or DVI (which do not support audio output), but you want the monitor speakers to play audio, you need to connect to this audio input port.

Note: This port only supports audio input and does not support output. This means that if you connect an external audio device to this port, the external audio device will not output (play) sound from the monitor.

Headphone Jack:

You can consider this port as Line-Out, which can output sound from the monitor and be used to connect headphones or other external audio devices.

Check system audio settings

Go to "System" → "Sound" → "More Sound Settings" and ensure that the current default playback device is set to the monitor.

If your monitor speakers are not appearing in the playback device list, please go to "Device Manager" → "Sound, video, and game controllers." Locate the audio device associated with your monitor, right-click on it, and select "Uninstall device" or "Remove device." Then click on "Scan for hardware changes" to check if the audio input and output devices are recognized. Make sure the audio driver is correctly installed and enabled.

Monitor speaker noise/distortion

  • Check the driver: Ensure that the computer's audio driver is installed and functioning properly. If there is a newer version available, consider uninstalling the old driver and installing the latest version to see if the issue is resolved.
  • Check the connection: Ensure that the audio and video cables are securely connected to both the monitor and the audio source device.
  • Eliminate external interference: Nearby electronic devices or wireless signals can interfere with the speakers, causing abnormal sounds. Try moving or turning off other devices to see if the issue is resolved.
  • Reset monitor settings:
Open the monitor's OSD menu→ "Setting" → "Reset" → "Yes".

Note: The OSD menu look may vary depending on the model.
