If you encounter the problem of being unable to use an external microphone with the combo audio jack on your laptop (or there is no response), please first confirm the design of your headphones/microphone and the audio jack on the laptop.

Headphone/microphone jack designs

• Three-ring (gold-colored metal rings) separate headphone and microphone jacks.

• Four-ring shared jack for headphones and microphone (commonly used in phones and mobile devices).

Laptop audio jack designs

• Separate headphone/microphone jacks design

• Combo audio jack

If you are only using external headphone functionality, both headphone jacks with three or four rings can be used.

If you directly connect a microphone with a three-ring design to the combo audio jack, it will not work. You'll need to use an audio adapter cable to connect the microphone to make it work.
