[Notebook] What do when the Type-C (Thunderbolt) port of the notebook computer is not charging?

If you encountered the problem of being unable to charge with the Type-C (Thunderbolt) port of your notebook computer, please try troubleshooting with the methods below.

Confirm the charging status

When you charge your notebook through the Type-C (Thunderbolt) port, the device can charge normally but when it is charged to a specific amount of power, it will stop charging, such as: 80%. This is due to battery maintenance related settings and is normal; please refer to [Notebook] What to do when the battery is not charging? for more information.

Confirm the appearance and specifications of the Type-C (Thunderbolt) port

Please confirm whether the appearance of the Type-C port is normal and whether dust or dirt accumulated inside the port; if so, please clean the dust and dirt with tools first and then test again.

Not all Type-C ports support the charging function; please refer to [Notebook] Identify the features supported by your Type-C Port and its specification to confirm the specifications of the Type-C port on your notebook computer.

Confirm the power of the charger

If the charger you’re using is not the genuine charger included, such as: mobile phone charger or portable power bank, etc., please confirm that the maximum charging power output (wattage “W”) of the charger is “greater than” or “equal to” the charger included with the notebook computer. If the condition described above is not met, the charger will not be able to charge your notebook computer.

For MSI notebook computers with chargers 100W and above (such as 150W, 180W, 280W and 330W, etc.), please select a PD portable power bank with a maximum output power of 100W as the backup power for the battery.

Note:

  • For models with Type-C ports that support PD quick charge, if there are issues of being unable to charge/slow charging speed, please confirm that the charger and charging cable used are both PD certified.
  • Portable power banks that are PD certified or have charging protection designs are preferred.
  • The maximum output power supported by portable power banks may have a limited number of connections; please consult the manufacturer of the portable power bank for details.

Remove external hubs or docking stations

If you use external hubs or docking stations, please remove such devices and connect the cable and charger to your notebook computer directly, and then test again.

Cross-check using other devices

If the charger you’re using is not the genuine charger included, please try charging other devices with the same charger. If they cannot be charged either, it means that the charger may be abnormal. It is recommended for you to contact the manufacturer of the charger.

If the troubleshooting methods above still could not solve your problem, please try using the genuine charger included with your product, and test the various charging ports. If they are all unable to charge, it means that the charger or the battery of the notebook computer may be abnormal; please contact the after-sales service center of MSI to provide you with further assistance.
